A Poem about Abuse

a short poem from the perspective of a woman being abused
I gave you a piece of me
But you were not pleased,
I gave you all of me,
But still you were not pleased.
You treated me like a slave
I was nothing but a whore to you,
You just used my body
And took what you wanted,
I kissed you on your lips.
You slap me in my face,
You say you did not like it,
And that I was a disgrace,
You say I was lucky,
To have a man like you in my life,
And if I ever try to leave you,
You would surely end my life
I was afraid of what you might do,
That’s why am still here, taking your abuse.
In this article (a poem about abuse sent to us by one of our readers), we see the frustration of a woman who is fearful of leaving her violent partner in case he kills her. This is a very real fear for many women who refuse to leave because of it. In many cases their fear is warranted. I know for a fact that violent men can turn on a dime and suddenly, your life is at stake. I was lucky enough to escape that exact situation myself back in 1999, when the guy that I was dating tried to murder me. Obviously he didn’t succeed, but he did go on to murder the next girl he went with. He was serving a long prison sentence the last time I heard, but the poor woman that he murdered doesn’t get a second chance. Her time was stolen from her. I escaped because of Divine Intervention, a story that I’ll write about later. I was the lucky one. She wasn’t.
If you fear that your partner will kill you, he probably will. So plan to leave in such a way that he won’t ever find you again, even if it means going and living in another territory, state or country.
