David Tuffley
Welcome. These pages on my book about Taoism are dedicated to the exposition and interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, perhaps one of the oldest books still in existence, and perhaps one of the most profound. The original text, written in ancient Chinese has been kindly translated and commented upon by someone I know not who, nor when. Whoever they are, they have the most profound grasp and understanding of the subject matter, and I honour them as a master. Of the many translations of the Tao Te Ching, this one, for me, is the most rewarding.
How to use this book
If you want to gradually transform yourself into someone who is in harmony with nature, who is in touch with their intuition to the point where they can see their interconnectedness with all things, then I recommend that you bookmark this site and come to the section on Taoism to read one passage a day, preferably in the morning. But more than just read the passages, reflect upon them during the day, looking persistently for evidence in your own life of how the principles discussed in the passages apply in your world. Over time, a gradual transformation will occur. Your insight into the nature of the world will be honed to the point where you intuitively understand situations and people in ways that conventional school-based learning cannot teach.
Why I Wrote This Book
I first came across the Tao Te Ching four decades ago. The moment I picked it up I somehow knew it was something very special. I was captivated by the simple truth and beauty of its message.
Having spent years studying literature, this slim little book had the greatest density of meaning of any piece of writing that I had yet encountered. I loved the challenge of unpacking that meaning and have been working at it ever since. The Tao te Ching is like Doctor Who’s Tardis, much bigger on the inside than it appears from the outside.
The message contained in the Tao Te Ching needs to be brought to a modern audience, and written so that its powerful message could be easily understood by people not familiar with the metaphors and idioms of ancient China.
This book has improved my life in a multitude of ways. I sincerely hope it will do the same for you, dear reader.
Why You Should Read This Book
The Tao Te Ching can transform you, heal you, make you into the person you were always meant to be. How can I say this? Because this book is essentially a how to guide to understanding your true nature. It teaches you how to know yourself and how to relate to the world you live in.
The Tao Te Ching has the distinction of being perhaps the oldest book in the world that is still in print, having been written around 2,500 years ago. Today, there are more editions of the Tao Te Ching than ever. There is something about this book that makes it a perennial favourite.
The longevity of this slim little book comes from the fundamental truth and simplicity of its message. It illustrates the truth of the old saying that the greater the truth, the more simply it can be stated.
