The Wisdom of Barry Long

The Wisdom of Barry Long

In the recording Being Honest to Love that is linked here, we hear The Wisdom of Barry Long. ‘Every woman is God in female form; every man is God in male form. God in form is making love to God in form. That’s how it’s supposed to be in existence – the forms separate us, but the love brings us together.’

Barry Long develops his radical teaching about man and woman and shows the way in which this fundamental relationship can be used to free us from emotional hiding. This is a process which brings a new love into the world; a searingly honest love that no longer tolerates pretence or suffering. Lived fully, honest love is a door to freedom for both man and woman • Live recording. Sydney, Australia. March, 1997.

Barry Long Biography

Barry Long (deceased) was an Australian spiritual teacher born in Sydney in 1926. His recorded and written teachings are essentially Gnostic in nature, and deal with ways to break down all the barriers between ourselves and love.

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” Rumi

Words from the Recording

Here is the first two minutes transcript of the audio recording you see below:

I want to go into emotional pain. Now this is not some pie in the sky, because emotional pain is behind all the cruelty, all the greed, and all the unhappiness in the world. And as we’re all a party to this cruelty, greed and unhappy world, we’re all a member of it, we have all known emotional pain. And to the degree that we know emotional pain, we cannot know love. Isn’t that strange!

Real Love

So many people think they know love, when their heart is broken. No, no, no! I’m talking about real love. When you have pain as you know it’s very difficult to love. Although if your heart is broken you might say that you “love this person who has broken my heart”, but that’s not true. You love the pain. Unfortunately, it is the human condition to love emotional pain and mental pain. Emotional pain leads to mental pain; mental pain leads to emotional pain. We have to find a way to get rid of emotional pain.

Emotional Pain

If you go out into the street today, everybody out there has emotional pain just down under the surface, waiting for the circumstance to push the button where they know this great and terrible grasping feeling of emotional pain and of mental pain that drives the mind nearly mad. Everybody out there… there’s no one who escapes. So what we’re here for today…. [in this lecture hall], and why you’ve come to me, is to hear some… some truth about your life, not some airy fairy story but some truth that I trust you will apply to your living life, and not just treat it as a lecture…….”
