How to be Proactive in this Cause

saying no assertively

This is by no means an all-inclusive list of ways to prevent sexual and domestic violence in your communities.  This is simply a list of possibilities to provide you with a place to start.

  • Pull others into line when they make inappropriate jokes.
  • Be proactive and learn about the resources in your area.
  • Generously volunteer at your local domestic violence/sexual assault program.
  • Be assertive and speak out against sexist comments about a female’s appearance.
  • Be wise and avoid using drugs and alcohol.
  • Hold and keep your friends accountable against violence.
  • Reveal and disclose those who you see being abusive or violent.
  • Do not participate in gossip about others, especially in sexual slander against another.
  • Report text messages and photos of sexual abuse or assault, or cyber bullying, to the police.
  • Intervene if you see someone yelling at their boyfriend or girlfriend.
  • Investigate and learn about domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Participate by asking your school or library to purchase books about living without violence, or purchase your own.
  • Practice being respectful by treating males and females with respect.
  • Become a leader by being the example others look to.
  • Protest and write letters to your elected officials about all forms of violence hurting teenage and adult women.
  • Speak out against domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Say what you think if you feel that something is violent and abusive.
  • Know your own limits.  Get help if you think you need it.

Remember there are no quick fixes to bullying, sexual harassment, domestic violence and sexual assault.  By being active and vocal, we can begin to create change.
